This is a humorous novel and the author writes about his characters almost as if he does not care for them very much. The first to whom we are introduced are Mr Glowry, his unhappy wife, and their only son Scythrop, named after a relative who had hanged himself. The dilapidated mansion they inhabit is in Lincolnshire.
