"Notes on Old Edinburgh" is a mid-19th-century work exposing the horrible conditions of life in the poor quarters of Edinburg. Isabella L. Bird, the book's author, aimed to bring changes in people's lives. She found support from two philanthrope gentlemen who accompanied her on her trips to poor quarters to examine the life conditions and expose the inability of the city government to change people's lives for the better.
